MULLER STREET PORTRAIT
In 2010, Architecture students were asked by their photography course facilitator, Sally Gaule, to portray a street in Yeoville. Muller street was selected as it had an interesting character, and also because one of its residents, Mr Wilfred Dudula, had been organising its residents to organise joint campaign - to clean the street and to socialise - and he was interested in hosting a street exhibition around the students' pictures.
So, about 50 students pictures were selected, printed, and posted on Mr Dudula"s front yard. Residents were asked to choose 6 photographs, using stickers:
Wits students and staff then facilitated collective debates where each residents explained their choices, sometimes starting broader debates on the streets, its experience, its issues. The pictures and the comments they triggered were then presented in several public events in Yeoville, where they attracted further comments from residents from other streets.
