SINGING YEOVILLE

The character of Yeoville is strongly linked with Rockey Raleigh street. In the 1970s and 1980s it was the heart of Johannesburg's vibrant alternative culture: a center where creative prople of all racial, social and religious backgrounds shared ideas at a time where inter-racial mixing was illegal under the laws of Apartheid. The Herald descrived the Yeoville of that tome as having a "colourful, bohemian energy and eclectism reminiscent of New York's East Village, Amsterdam and London's Camden Town". Today it ias an equally vibrant character of a Pan-African kind.

"Down Rockey Street" is a collection of music taht represents the different genres and styles that have come out of Yeoville from 1980 to this day. It was compiled by William Dewar, in November 2010, when he was a Master of Architecture students at Wits.
