In South Africa in 2020 the state issued a warning that: ¡°Anyone that creates or spreads fake news about the Coronavirus COVID-19 is liable for prosecution. Verify the information before you share information.¡± Despite this injunction, and similar warnings issued  by other states,. this pandemic has created the perfect conditions for misinformation and an attack on truth. Some politicians and many shadowy and some openly operating entities are siding with lies.

Mental Health & Fragility: Lessons learnt during HIV and COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has upended nearly every aspect of life, yet within this flux, new opportunities have emerged in rethinking fundamental aspects of well-being, while learning from the past. In South Africa, we remain in the grip of multiple intersecting epidemics, some on-going, like our collective fight against HIV, others less visible, like the hard-to-grasp epidemic of mental health and continuous trauma. In conversation with Anastasia Ugwuanyi, Nabeelah Bemath will reflect on students¡¯ recent experiences in coping with COVID-19, while Pierre Brouard will relate these experiences to the many lessons learnt from South Africa¡¯s response to HIV/AIDS.

The Essentials: the arts, music and the food of life

Artists are by nature innovators. They make visible and audible the world around us through visual media, music, film, and theatre, and in so doing, they often seek to shift our perspective on the world as we experience it, even if, and perhaps especially because, we are challenged by what we see, feel, or hear. Both art and music are experiential and temporal, two aspects of the creative and performative act that have been challenged by recent circumstances. And in many ways, we can also see the art of medicine is equally experiential, temporal and performative, if in different ways. As art and music have always been part of the human experience and infused into many healing practices, this forum is an opportunity to reflect on the experience of artistic and creative innovators during the pandemic.
