Wits Language School offers specialised English courses to help you prepare for tertiary studies or tests that you need for university admission. The English for University Success course provides you with the necessary skills to enhance your Academic English Language proficiency, which will enable you to get ahead in your studies and ultimately achieve academic excellence. 

PLEASE NOTE: Courses will be delivered via contact learning in 2024, unless COVID-19 restrictions necessitate a change to ONLINE delivery, or if specified.

 

Course fee

This course costs R12 580:

  • Course fee includes a course book & stationery
  • 10 week course + 1 exam session
  • 50 contact hours & 20 online hours
  • Attendance on Tuesdays & Thursdays, 17:30 to 20:00 

The academic pre-assessment fee is R1 250. (90 min; online or in person)

Classes are subject to a minimum of 8 students. We reserve the right not to run a particular course in an intake if there is insufficient demand. 

Duration

This course is part-time and runs for 10 weeks; there is no induction.

Qualification

Participants who meet all minimum requirements for the course are awarded a Certificate of Competence.

Programme Overview

The English for University Success course provides Academic English learning to assist students to discover their learning style and manage their learning; access, process and manage information using critical reading skills and strategies; apply critical thinking skills such as analysis, synthesis and evaluation; follow abstract argumentation; improve academic essay writing skills; and make ethical decisions with regard to compiling information and respecting intellectual property and copyright in order to avoid plagiarism.

Curriculum

In this course, students will be exposed to the tertiary learning environment; effective study habits and time management; unpacking lectures by listening for main ideas and details; reading multiple extended texts using skimming and scanning skills to identify relevant information and to determine point of view; and extended writing tasks including editing their work for common and complex grammar errors.

Entry Requirements

Please ensure you meet the following requirements when applying for the course: 

  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • Minimum of provisional matric exemption
  • All students must be literate and numerate
  • All students are required to complete a pre-assessment to determine the student’s level of English proficiency (the pre-assessment takes 1½ hours)
  • The assessment can be conducted remotely via Canvas as well as in person.
  • Entry to this course is dependent on students demonstrating NQF level 4 language proficiency.
