Berlin Summer School

The Berlin Summer School was held on the 16th of July-28th of July 2017 at the Technishe Universit?t of Berlin (TUB). It was a joint effort between the Habitat Unit (TUB) and the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits), Johannesburg. The objective of the Summer School was to offer training and capacity building for the Wits masters and PhD students, as well as the Urban Management students from TUB.

Themes covered included housing, urban ecology, urban informality and social exclusion. The latter were presented by guest lectures from Wits (such as Dr Brian Boshoff and Mawabo Msingaphantsi) and TUB in the form of workshops, lecturers and excursions. The purpose was to have a comparative analysis of the different themes from an African context and from a Berlin context.

The lead team members from TUB were Professor Philipp Misselwitz (Principal Investigator), Dr Anna Steigemann (Part-time Project Coordinator) and Jakub Galuska (Projector Coordinator). The lead team members from Wits were Professor Mfaniseni Fana Sihlongonyane (Principal Investigator), Professor Marie Huchzermeyer (Principal Investigator), Taki Sithagu (Project Coordinator) and Lebo Skhosana (Project Admin Assistant).
