The newest Research Institute to the Faculty of Health Sciences was approved in January 2013 – the Wits Research Institute for Malaria (WRIM). The Institute founded by Professors Maureen Coetzee (Malaria Entomology Research Unit, School of Pathology), Theresa Coetzer (NHLS Plasmodium Molecular Research Unit / Red Cell Membrane Unit, School of Pathology) and Robyn van Zyl (Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, School of Therapeutic Sciences), aims to produce top quality research and researchers that will benefit malaria control in Africa and place it amongst the leading malaria research groups in the world. The members of WRIM have been active for several years in various aspects of malaria including Antimalarial drug discovery; Molecular parasitology; Vector control and insecticide resistance; Investigations of malaria transmission and Bioinformatics.
