Neurosciences
Part 1
Qualifying courses consisting of lectures, practicals, tutorials, demonstrations and ward rounds, extending over one year of part-time study. Courses include:
- Applied Anatomy for OT (Neuroanatomy)
- Applied Physiology for OT(Neurophysiology)
- Occupational Science and Models
Part 2
Qualifying courses consisting of tutorials, assignments and fieldwork, extending over one year of part-time study, in
- Neurosciences applied to OT (special techniques for treating children and adults, e.g.: NDT, Brunnstrom, Rood, Doman, PNF, SI)
The PG Dip and coursework masters in neurosciences focus on all the popular frames of references, such as NDT, Motor re-learning, Rood and Brunnstrom. During the theory week the basis of all these theories are analysed and the effectiveness of the techniques in the south African context is evaluated.
In the practical weeks in the adult and paediatric blocks, both lecturers are NDT trained, but we do not exclusively focus on NDT. You are not qualified in NDT at the end of the PG Dip/MSc, but you will definitely learn some important techniques and be exposed to the theory. We do not believe that NDT is superior or the only way to treat neuro patients, therefore we focus on a variety of frames of reference.
If you wish to only obtain an NDT qualification, it would be advisable for you to rather complete the NDT course. But if you want to improve your knowledge of neurology and the in-depth sciences, improve your skills overall as a neuro OT and use a variety of techniques, the neuro coursework is ideal.
