Learning pathways in the context of a Just Energy Transition

South Africa faces the dual challenge of environmental degradation and socio-economic disparities. A Just Energy Transition (JET) presents an opportunity to ensure that, as a shift to sustainable energy is made, the burdens and benefits are fairly distributed, particularly among employees and communities at risk. The research focused on where intermediate jobs, stemming from the JET, will be created in the highest numbers to reduce unemployment in the country.

Employment and Labour Market Analysis (ELMA) in South Africa

This report determines the key challenges to matching supply and demand in the South African labour market related to a sustainable and socially just energy transition. Its goal is to determine which interventions could support the sector’s job creation. To do this, it provides three sets of information and analysis about the workings of the green economy. The report discusses South Africa’s employment generation challenges, how the labour market is evolving, and what factors enable or inhibit the just transition.

An assessment of skills supply and demand for renewable energy, energy efficiency, and regional energy integration

The main aim of the research was to provide an analysis of renewable energy RE, energy efficiency (EE), and regional energy integration (REI) skills development needs in relation to the set of skills demanded by employers and those currently available in Zambia and the SADC region. Therefore, this report’s purpose is to build on and enhance the insights garnered in Phase 1 and develop recommendations to inform KGRTC’s skills development strategy, including priority courses and areas of focus, and potential partnerships.
