Research Entities

Research forms an integral component of the School. The main research areas are both strategic and applied, with particular emphasis on research that has relevance to the region.

AGINCOURT MRC/Wits Rural Public Health and Health Transitions Research Unit (Agincourt) runs the Agincourt Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) which surveys approximately 107 500 people annually and has a unique dataset describing the changing pattern of rural mortality, non-communicable diseases, and nutrition. The Agincourt HDSS constitutes a platform for research programmes that elucidate causal pathways and test interventions across the life course.
PRICELESS SA PRICELESS SA is a programme to enable smart decisions about health investments in South Africa. The intent is to provide information that will improve the way in which resources are allocated and priorities are set to improve public health. The aim of PRICELESS is to support the development of evidence-based information and tools in order to help determine how best to use existing scarce resources so that better decisions can be made in prioritizing public health interventions.
CHP The Centre for Health Policy (CHP) is one of the few multi-disciplinary health policy units in South Africa and has over 20 years of research experience. As an academic research group, CHP actively seeks to draw together theoretical insights and empirical evidence in understanding health system change and in proposing strategies for future health systems development.
CARTA CARTA strengthens university-wide systems to support research. CARTA offers a well-thought-out approach to rebuild and strengthen the capacity of African universities to produce world-class researchers, research leaders, and scholars. CARTA is a collaboration jointly led by the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), Kenya, and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), South Africa.
