Immunohaematology

The Immunohaematology laboratory staff members are integrally involved in offering immunology-related diagnostic services, conducting research, and in supervising and training postgraduate students and staff working towards higher degrees. Specialized diagnostic services include cross-match testing for transplantation, HLA typing and antibody screening, primary immunodeficiency screening, cytokine analysis, and diagnosis of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH). The unit performs ~1 600 tests per annum. Current research projects focus on immunological aspects in a range of diseases including cancer, HIV, TB, neonatal sepsis, allergy, immune reconstitution and transplantation. Staff members are involved in the organization and facilitation of annual Basic as well as an Advanced Immunology courses. Research projects are grant funded, and a number of postgraduate students are supported off this grant funding too.
