MDent programme

The Department has registrars that  undergo specialty training in the field of Community Dentistry. The four year programme is aimed at developing the knowledge, skills, competencies and experience of the students in order to enable them to qualify as specialists in Community Dentistry with the HPCSA. Furthermore we aim to provide the country with specialised expertise in Public Oral Health and to build capacity for future academic careers. They are equipped to undertake surveillance; assess population oral health; monitoring and evaluation of oral health programmes; research and management of health services.

MSc programme

The aim of the course is to offer postgraduate students an appropriate programme with knowledge, skills, competencies and experience in the field of Public Oral Health, which once qualified, will be able to understand and contribute to the field of Community Dentistry. They are equipped to work with information managers in the District Health System (DHS) and local authorities in order to develop the information base required to support the work of the DHS in relation to oral health improvement. In addition they can manage research projects and establish a research profile in the field of Community Dentistry by publishing one’s work in peer reviewed journal and books.
