From 4 – 7 December, CALS co-hosted our first annual Anti-Repression Week in partnership with the Right2Protest Project. Events ranged from a panel on food security in politically volatile times to the launch of one of our flagship projects – a model law designed to combat strategic litigation against public participation or “SLAPP” suits. We can think of no better way to end off the year than by drawing attention to repressive tactics used against activists and discussing how to address them. We also welcome the repeal of the crime of defamation as a step towards protecting free speech.
A number of other important partnerships have come to the fore recently. Along with Afrika Ikalafe, CALS is working on a landmark project to advance rural democracy and develop research and training on traditional courts and traditional councils. In court, we are working closely with our client partners at the Initiative for Strategic Litigation in Africa on an important case to address gaps in the law defining sexual offences. Finally, we were pleased to host Probono.Org and Norton Rose Fullbright recently for consultations with the survivors of the Usindiso Building fire in Marshalltown.
