Launch: Joint civil society submission on state capture
- Lee-Anne Bruce
On 19 February the Civil Society Working Group on State Capture will launch a joint submission to the Zondo Commission of Inquiry
A diverse mix of civil society organisations came together in what we now call the Civil Society Working Group on State Capture (CSWG) to tackle state capture and highlight its impact on the people of South Africa. The Working Group’s successful collaborative efforts over the past year have built and fortified civil society networks and have resulted in fruitful endeavours. Organisations part of the Working Group have: continuously engaged in a number of ways; released joint media statements; made evidence-based submissions to the Zondo Commission; engaged in the process of planning and holding a People’s Hearing on State Capture and worked to successfully draft a joint submission. This joint submission is a summary of civil society’s recommendations to the Zondo Commission and will be submitted to the Zondo Commission during the week of the joint submission launch.
While the Working Group on State Capture is proud to have achieved its 2019 mandate, we are also keenly aware that efforts to tackle state capture and corruption are ongoing and require long term, targeted civil society engagement.
At this point in time, with the Commission of Inquiry most likely to be granted an extension to continue its work in 2020, we are presented with an opportune moment to release our joint submission; which calls for the Commission to release an interim report amongst other important and impactful recommendations addressing criminal justice agencies and the State.
We invite you to the public launch of the joint submission. At the meeting, the civil society joint submissionand our agenda for action in 2020 will be presented to partners in civil society and the media.
