Reflecting on Tito Mboweni’s legacy

Former finance minister and Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni, served as an Honorary Professor at Wits.

Mboweni was an Honorary Professor at the School of Economics and Finance after his retirement as SARB governor until 2017. Held in high regard, he passed away after a short illness on 12 October 2024 at the age of 65.

In an interview with 702, Dr Kenneth Creamer, an economist at the School, reflected on Mboweni’s legacy, well known achievements and those that went below the radar.

In an article, economist Professor Jannie Rossouw has praised Mboweni’s contribution stating that: “Mboweni was not afraid of being unpopular. He was steadfast in protecting the autonomy and independence of the South African Reserve Bank.”

Although acknowledging his many successes, Rossouw also highlighted his shortcomings.

South Africans have taken to various platforms to celebrate his life and stewardship.
