New Head of the School of Electrical and Information Engineering

Professor Cuthbert Nyamupangedengu takes on the role of the Head of School of Electrical and Information Engineering with effect from 1 October 2024.
Prof. Nyamupangedengu brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this position. He joins Wits from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT), where he served as Professor and Head of the Electrical Engineering Department from July 2022 to September 2024. Prior to his tenure at VUT, he was an Associate Professor at Wits, where he led the High Voltage Research Programme.
Nyamupangedengu's academic journey is marked by excellence. He holds a PhD in Engineering, a masters in engineering (with distinction), and a postgraduate diploma in higher education (with distinction) from Wits University. He holds his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Zimbabwe. His commitment to research and education is evident in his NRF C2 rating, awarded in 2021, recognising his significant contributions to the field.
His research focus on high-voltage electrical insulation and the application of nanotechnology in sustainable smart insulation solutions positioning the School at the forefront of innovative energy solutions. Nyamupangedengu's impressive track record includes the supervision of over 30 postgraduate students and the publication of more than 89 peer-reviewed articles, with five of his publications receiving awards.
Beyond academia, he has made valuable contributions to the energy sector. His work as an energy consultant for the Department of Public Enterprises and the Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA) demonstrates his ability to bridge academic research with practical industry applications. His active involvement in professional organisations, including his roles as the inaugural Chairperson of the Electrical Insulation Chapter of SAIEE and his past representation of CIGRÉ Southern Africa's Study Committee D1, underscores his commitment to advancing the field of electrical engineering.
Nyamupangedengu's leadership, expertise, and vision will benefit the School of Electrical and Information Engineering and the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment as his appointment aligns with the Faculty’s commitment to excellence in research, education, and industry engagement.
