Professor Nicole Falkof

Nicole Falkof is an Associate Professor and of Department, Media Studies at Wits.
Her research interests centre on race, culture and fear in mass media in the global south. She is the author of a monograph about whiteness in the late apartheid era and is currently working on an analysis of risk, anxiety and moral panic in South Africa.
She obtained her Honours degree in English from the University of Cape Town and spent a number of years working as a journalist in the United Kingdom, where she also completed a Master’s degree in Critical Theory at the University of Sussex and a PhD in Humanities and Cultural Studies at Birkbeck College, University of London. She returned to South Africa in 2012 to take up an NRF-funded postdoctoral fellowship before joining Wits in 2013. She is currently supervising three Doctoral and two Master’s projects, with one PhD and three MAs already completed.
