Hlonipha Mokoena is an Associate Professor and researcher at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research. She was the keynote speaker during the graduation ceremony for graduands in the Faculty of Humanities.
Biography of Professor Hlonipha Mokoena
Hlonipha Mokoena is an Associate Professor and researcher at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research. This multi-talented public intellectual, well-known for her work in many different parts of the world, joined Wits in June 2015 from Columbia University in New York where she worked in the Anthropology Department.
Born in Soweto, Mokoena schooled in KwaZulu-Natal and obtained her doctorate from the University of Cape Town in 2005. She is widely published and is the author of several books focused on South African public intellectuals.
Her first book titled Magema Fuze: The Making of a Kholwa Intellectual focuses on Fuze, the author of Abantu Abamnyama Lapa Bavela Ngakona translated as The Black People and Whence They Came.
Mokoena articles have been published in many academic journals and she has also penned several catalogue essays.
She is passionate about teaching and learning and once said that “An education that is devoid of ethics is empty and meaningless and will produce smart but reckless human beings. The benefit to society of having an intelligent and articulate citizenry is priceless…”
