Staff sport gains momentum

- Wits University

Organised staff sport is blossoming across the sector and Wits staff teams are steadily building their reputation.

Staff sport teams promote health and build social capital amongst working adults

The Wits netball and football teams took part in the Top 4 tournament held at Tswane University of Technology, Pretoria on 22 March 2025.

Witsies went up against hosts and teams from Gauteng Emergency Services, Ekurhuleni Emergency Services, Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital and the Teachers Football Club (Meadowlands).

The fledgling Wits Staff Netball team played three games securing one win, one draw and one loss while the Football team won all their three games by 3-1.

Sport participation is associated with quality social networks boosting social and psychological health. Sport engagement has also been linked to healthy ageing, making it easier for individuals to achieve market and non-market objectives through interactions with other individuals.
