A time to mingle and flex
- Wits University
Staff Wellness Week a full experience of health, fitness and fun.
The arrival of spring heralds a special time at the University and has Witsies itching to get out for a good time. Wits Parade, Staff Fun Day, Lenn Smith Campus Fun Run/Walk, Staff Wellness Week roll-off the tongue as Witsies prep for these annual events hosted in September.
Wits Parade on 31 August 2024 saw students and staff from Wits’ five campuses gather for a spirited and energetic Parade through streets surrounding Braamfontein, the ‘heart’ of Wits University also referred to by many as the ‘main campus’.
It was a double deluxe for staff who continued with the day through dabbling in friendly sport and inter-department challenges as part of the Staff Fun Day. Known for working hard, staff took a breather to relax, reenergise spirits and make new friends. The Staff Fun Day also ushered the annual Staff Wellness Week on 2-6 September, traditionally held during the mid-term break to afford staff time to fully engage in the wellness programme. Championed by the DVC: People Development and Culture, and partners, the aim of the week is to promote holistic wellness.
During this period employees have access to a range of free screenings and activities that are vital for detecting, preventing and managing chronic diseases. Watch recordings of Wellness Talks.

Chemistry’s Lerato Mokoloko won the women's category – a position she has maintained for three years in a row. She was followed by Francesca Parrini (a former winner of this category) and Memory Zimuwandeyi.
In the good spirit of encouraging participation, last place title-holders Mponeng Oliphant, Joyce Gama, Hitman Gumede made sure that the Chemistry Department acquires a different kind of reputation till 2025.
This key event on the Wits calendar was initiated in 1968 by Lenn Smith, a technician in the Metallurgy workshop. Smith passed away this year at a ripe age of 100 years. The event opened with a minute's silence to honour his memory.
