Prerequisite

The prerequisite for this course is a pass in Mathematics I major (i.e. Math1034 and Math 1036) or equivalent pass mark (determined by the school) in Engineering Mathematics 1.

Lectures and tutorials

Mathematics II major consists of six modules, giving a total of 48 points.

In the first semester, the modules given are:

  • Multivariable Calculus Math2007A (MC) (8 points),
  • Linear Algebra Math2019A (LA) (8 points),
  • Basic Analysis Math2001A (BA) (8 points).

In the second semester the modules given are:

  • Abstract Math Math2015A (AM) (8 points),
  • Advanced Analysis Math2016A (AA) (8 points),
  • Differential Equations Math2003A (DE) (8 points) or Statistics Stat2012A (8 points)
Tests and examinations

Each MATH II Major course has a final exam.

Mathematics beyond second year and mathematical maturity

For the students to proceed to third year, they have to pass Math II Major modules.

Emphasis is put on BA and AM as these topics are an introduction to the type of thinking that is required in most modern mathematics.

This may require an adjustment of your mathematical mindset. Namely, an understanding that mathematical arguments must proceed by strictly logical arguments from a set of well-defined assumptions (axioms). The grasp of the axiomatic idea is a demonstration of mathematical maturity.
