Software Available

The Health Sciences Research Office (HSRO) has software programs to assist in analysing both quantitative and qualitative data. Stata and Statistica is available for quantitative data analysis. NVivo and MAXQDA is available for qualitative data analysis. These software programs can be accessed at the HSRO Writing Room on the third floor of the Phillip V Tobias Health Sciences Building. Please contact Ms Shae Lazarus, courses.health@wits.ac.za for more information.

Stata Software

Stata is a general-purpose statistical software package developed by StataCorp for data manipulation, visualization, statistics, and automated reporting. It is used by researchers in many fields, including biomedicine, epidemiology, sociology and science ("Disciplines"; Wikipedia, Retrieved 22 February 2023).

Stata 18 SE one year license is available to the University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Health Sciences Staff/Joint Staff and Postgraduate Students to install on their desktop or laptop. This software is compatible with Windows, Linux and macOS. The license expires on the 27th of December 2024. Please contact Ms Shae Lazarus, courses.health@wits.ac.za for more information.

Statistica Software

Statistica is an advanced analytics software package originally developed by StatSoft and currently maintained by TIBCO Software Inc. Statistica provides data analysis, data management, statistics, data mining, machine learning, text analytics and data visualization procedures (Wikipedia, Retrieved 22 February 2023).

STATISTICA 14.0.1 is available to the University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Health Sciences Staff/Joint Staff and Postgraduate Students to install on their desktop or laptop. This software is only compatible with Windows. The license expires on the 31st of December 2024. Please contact Ms Shae Lazarus, courses.health@wits.ac.za for more information.

MAXQDA Software

MAXQDA is a qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research software program developed and distributed by VERBI Software based in Berlin, Germany (MAXqda Resources ; Wikipedia, Retrieved 22 February 2023). MAXQDA is designed for the use in computer-assisted qualitative and mixed methods data, text and multimedia analysis in academic, scientific, and business institutions.

NVivo Software

NVivo is a qualitative data analysis (QDA) computer software package produced by QSR International. NVivo helps qualitative researchers to organize, analyze and find insights in unstructured or qualitative data like interviews, open-ended survey responses, journal articles, social media and web content, where deep levels of analysis on small or large volumes of data are required (McNiff 2016; Wikipedia, Retrieved 22 February 2023).
