Overview

In the Wits Faculty of Health Sciences much of the research effort is directed towards serious health issues which are affecting our communities - issues such as HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. 

In addition, research into other diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, which are increasing in prevalence in South Africa, also holds prominence. Being a diverse Faculty, studies are also being undertaken in the fields of oral health sciences, therapeutic sciences and drug delivery, as well as in the basic sciences.

The Faculty of Health Sciences is home to one Nobel Prize Winner; seven research intensive Schools; nine NRF A-rated scientists; two Department of Science & Innovation (formerly the Department of Science and Technology) and the National Research Foundation’s Centres of Excellence (DSI-NRF CoEs); two African Network for Drug and Diagnostics Innovation Centres (ANDI) and to eight Department of Science and Technology/National Research Foundation South African Research Chairs. There are currently 28 research entities based in the Faculty and two Research Thrusts (Diseases of Lifestyle and Molecular Biosciences). The quality of the Faculty’s research output ranks amongst the best in the country and is respected internationally.

The Faculty Research Office (HSRO) contributes to the University's research agenda by:

  • Promoting research which will contribute to the well-being of local and global populations
  • Supporting research which develops and stretches the minds of postgraduate students and plays an integral role in:
    • Facilitating excellence in research
    • Supporting emerging researchers and postgraduate students
    • Stimulating critical enquiry and the broadening of knowledge in the field of health and disease

This office provides:

  • Training workshops
  • Information on external funding sources
  • Management of internal research entities and applications for new entities
  • Research capacity building initiatives
  • Management of the Faculty Research Budget
  • Mentoring for postgraduate students and supervisors
