Dr Serge Kubanza

The GCI extends a hearty welcome to Dr Serge Kubanza!

Prior to join the GCI, Serge undertook a three-month internship at the UN-Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland from February 2017-May 2017. His current research focuses on Sustainable Solid Waste Management in Sub-Saharan African Cities: A study of Waste to Energy in Johannesburg, South Africa and attempts to assess the environmental benefits that this method offers over landfilling, dumping and composting in terms of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, electricity generation, land use and cost savings.

Serge’s doctoral research focused on the concepts of social and environmental justice in the context of solid waste management in Kinshasa, DRC, and the impact of these two aspects on sustainable development. The paradigms of cultural theory and conceptual principles of Systems Dynamics were used to determine how actors in the form of four social solidarities (fatalist, hierarchist, individualist and egalitarian) influence the management of solid waste in the city and how they interact dynamically.
