Mathematics in Industry Study Group in South Africa 2009

The sixth Mathematics in Industry Study Group in South Africa (MISGSA) will be held in the School of Computational and Applied Mathematics at the University of the Witwatersrand from Monday 26th January to Friday 30 January 2009.

You are cordially invited to participate in the Study Group. The Study Group brings together mathematicians and industrial researchers for five days of intensive collaboration on about five projects submitted by South African industry.

All delegates at MISGSA are expected to participate to a high degree in the modelling and problem solving small group sessions.
There is no registration fee because delegates provide their time and expertise free at MISGSA.

There will be no charge for meals. Meals are an important meeting time at MISGSA where problems are discussed and progress is reviewed.

Moderators play an essential role in a Mathematics in Industry Study Group as described under the heading "Study Group". Moderators have the incentive that they will be the leading author in any publication. Also the travel costs, within South Africa, of Moderators will be paid by MISGSA.

In 2009 each problem will have a student Moderator as well as a member-of-staff Moderator. Postgraduate students are especially welcome at MISGSA. It is a good opportunity to observe and actively participate in the problem solving process. Problem moderators will be encouraged to find suitable tasks for the students.

Two prizes of R500 will be awarded for outstanding performance by students at MISGSA 2009.

A Graduate Student Workshop will be organised at MISGSA 2009 on Saturday 24 January. A Students may apply for financial support on the registration form.
