Tropical Medicine and Hygiene
The Postgraduate Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene extends over one year of full-time study and is highly recommended for medical doctors with an interest in tropical medicine and infectious diseases.
Overview
This now fully online programme provides doctors with the tools to meet the modern challenges of tropical health posed by infectious diseases and human parasites.
It is open to doctors who hold a medical qualification from a recognised medical school in any country, and who are registered for medical practice in that country.
The use of online webinars and self-directed learning ensures the syllabus is covered with flexibility.
The Wits PG DTM&H qualification is the longest-standing course of its type in Africa. The course offers students up-to-date insights into tropical medicine and infectious diseases.
Curriculum
Four courses make up the programme:
- CMID5010A: Key Concepts in Tropical Health. NQF level 8. Credits: 30
- CMID5011A: Vector-borne and other Tropical Infectious Diseases.NQF level 8. Credits: 30
- CMID5012A: Important Communicable and Non-communicable Conditions in the Tropics. NQF level 8. Credits: 35
- CMID5013A: Prevention and Control of Diseases in the Tropics. NQF level 8. Credits: 25
Entry Requirements
Medical degree and HPCSA (or equivalent) registration.
Applicants must have a good standard of written and spoken English and of English comprehension.

- Applications are handled centrally by the Student Enrolment Centre (SEnC). Once your application is complete in terms of requested documentation, your application will be referred to the relevant School for assessment. - Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal.
- Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
