Vision:

Our vision is clearly to maintain a Cardiothoracic Surgery unit of excellence.

             --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Goals:

To fulfill our vision we should have clear goals and bring activities and systems into place to reach those goals.  The following are important:

  • Situational leadership and individual behaviour
    • Developing a unit built on trust and respect including appropriate role modeling.
    • Ensuring that high levels of professionalism exist in the unit.
    • Development of the multi-disciplinary team principle.

  • Administrative goals
    • Ensuring that all aspects of personnel management (including but not limited too – recruitment, appraisal systems, leave, call rosters, administrative management of RWOPS etc.) are dealt with.  This includes all medical staff and the perfusionists working in the unit.
    • That regular administrative unit meetings are held.
    • That communication in the unit and with referring units is strengthened.

  • Academic goals
    • Ensuring that undergraduate teaching timetables and delegation of teaching duties are managed.
    • Developing an appropriate and equitable registrar rotation.
    • Developing an adequate registrar teaching programme.
    • Ensuring that appropriate CPD activities, academic meetings and society meetings are attended and maintaining active participation.

  • Clinical goals
    • Monitoring clinical standards and addressing deficiencies (including robust M&M and adequate clinical audit).
    • Planning activities of the cardiothoracic unit effectively (this includes a weekly multi-disciplinary planning meeting).
    • Co-ordinating theatre, ICU, ward and high care activities and ensuring optimal utilization of resources and time.
    • Ensuring that close working relationships between cardiothoracic surgery, anaesthesia, intensive care and cardiology are maintained.
