Overview
Professor Maeyane S. Moeng is the Head of the Division and serves as the Head of Trauma at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital in Parktown. He has led the Trauma department at CMJAH since 2012, following a period of acting leadership. Under his stewardship, this unit has experienced significant growth and has made substantial contributions to the Trauma Surgery specialty landscape in the country.
The Department of Surgery has seen remarkable growth in recent years. The number of MMed records and PhD completions has steadily increased. It is now time to build upon the strengths of this department and address its weaknesses. The training platform not only encompasses central hospitals such as Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, and Helen Joseph Hospital, but also peripheral hospitals including Edenvale Hospital, Klerksdorp Hospital, Leratong Hospital, and Thelle Mogoerane Hospital.
Prof Moeng officially assumed the role of head in April 2024 and is eager to guide the Department into the future while maintaining its global competitiveness and edge within the University.
There is an opportunity for further growth within the department. Currently, the Orthopaedic department is under the leadership of Professor Ramokgopa, and Urology is led by Professor Adam. We are seeking new leadership for the Cardiothoracic, Plastics, and Paediatric divisions. This presents an opportunity for the revitalisation of the entire department and its elevation to new heights.
The Department of Surgery is part of Cluster A, which comprises all divisions and departments under Surgery, as well as Anaesthesia, Critical Care, and Forensic Medicine
