Continued Professional Development (CPD)
Registration as a Medical Physicist under the Health Professions Act, 1974 (Act No. 56 of 1974) carries a responsibility best described by Booklet 1 in the series of Guidelines for good practice in Medicine, Dentistry and Medical Science namely: ?Maintain and improve the standards of your performance by keeping your professional knowledge and skills up to date throughout your working life. In particular, regularly take part in educational activities that relate to your branch or discipline of medicine, dentistry or medical sciences.?
The Health Professions Council of South Africa thus requires Medical Physicists to participate in CPD activities to ensure this ongoing development. Various programs exist at the Johannesburg Hospital to ensure that the staff are developed and meet the requirements from the HPCSA. Examples of this include Joint meetings with other Medical Physicists from Gauteng Province, Journal Clubs, Congress and Symposium attendance and monthly divisional academic meetings.
