The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Witwatersrand is the largest department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in South Africa. It is affiliated with two of the country's 10 National Hospitals and has multiple training sites across Gauteng and Northwest provinces.

Mission:

Our mission is to be a center of excellence in maternal, fetal and women's health. We aim to achieve this by providing high-quality clinical services, demonstrating leadership, conducting research, fostering innovation, advocating for women's health, and promoting effective teaching and learning. Additionally, we aspire to become the preferred destination for undergraduate and postgraduate students in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, both locally and internationally. We are committed to cultivating a shared departmental identity, fostering diversity, and promoting inclusion.

Core Mandate:

Our core mandate is four-fold:

1. Service Delivery: We are dedicated to providing evidence-based Obstetrics and Gynaecology services of the highest quality, cost-effectively, and respectfully. Our goal is to enhance the experiences of women and their families and improve health outcomes.

2. Teaching and Training: We strive to provide exceptional learning experiences for our undergraduate and postgraduate students, including registrars, subspecialist trainees, and master’s and PhD candidates.

3. Research: We aspire to become a leading center of excellence in Maternal, Fetal, and Women's health research at the national, regional, and international levels. Additionally, we aim to develop and nurture clinical scientists and other research scholars.

4. Advocacy and Community Partnership: We seek to partner and collaborate with the communities we serve and other stakeholders to improve women’s health and advocate for women’s health.
