Dr Goolam completed her Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Medicine degrees at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, before continuing her specialist training in Ophthalmology at Wits and receiving her Fellowship in Ophthalmology from the Colleges of Medicine and Surgery of South Africa. She has a Master of Medicine from the University of Witwatersrand.

Her areas of interest include cornea, ophthalmic genetics and cataract surgery.
