Project goals
Mapping AMD Sources
Identify areas afflicted with AMD pollution and determine which characteristics of AMD can be used to create value.
Develop Sustainable AMD Treatment Technologies
Create or use technologies that can treat AMD in a sustainable way, minimizing environmental impacts while maximizing resource recovery.
Revenue Generation from AMD
Extract value from AMD to generate revenue and potentially profit, thereby incentivizing AMD treatment, in the form of:
- Critical raw materials such as rare earth elements (REEs), by utilizing Ion Exchange and other physico-chemical processes.
- Acidity, by using the AMD to pre-treat lignocellulosic biomass for easier access to and production of glucose.
Resource and Waste Minimization
Employ recycling and recovery processes to minimize waste output from AMD treatment processes, promoting a circular economy model.
Expand AMD Management Capacity
Build capacity and extend the network for managing AMD pollution to unlock alternative water resources for both rural and urban communities.
Economic Analysis and Tool Development
Develop analytical tools to assess the profitability of the AMD treatment and resource recovery processes, helping to identify economic drivers and barriers.
Community Welfare Improvement
Evaluate and enhance the socio-economic benefits for local communities by improving the ecological status of water systems affected by AMD.
